Oh happy day! Today marks the first day that gay marriage is legal in the state of Vermont and Ben & Jerry’s is celebrating by temporarily renaming popular “Chubby Hubby” ice cream to “Hubby Hubby”.
“The legalization of marriage for gay and lesbian couples in Vermont is certainly a step in the right direction, and something worth celebrating with peace, love - and plenty of ice cream,” Ben & Jerry’s CEO Walt Freese said when announcing the name change.
Sadly, the name change is mostly symbolic, as Burlington-based Ben & Jerry’s isn’t changing labels on “Chubby Hubby” pints sold in stores and the name will only be in place for 30 days locally. Darn it! Anyway, if you live in Vermont, keep your eyes peeled for one of Ben & Jerry's wedding mobiles which will be handing out free "Hubby Hubby" ice cream today.
