Comfortable yet chic, trust us when we say you'll want to live in these fashion-forward pieces from the Shades Of Grey label. That's because the founder and visionary behind the brand, Micah Cohen, has developed a sixth sense for staying ahead of the fashion curve and yet still balancing his collections with staples that align seamlessly with every woman's wardrobe. What's not to love about that?
Here, Micah dishes on how he got his start as a fashion designer, his latest collection and much, much more:
How did you get your start as a fashion designer?
After graduating from FIDM in—oh whoops my computer isn’t writing numbers anymore, bummer—I started a menswear line with a business partner which then ultimately lead to me starting SHADES OF GREY BY MICAH COHEN in 2009. I added the women’s collection for AW 2013.
Which accomplished designer has most influenced you?
In womenswear, Clare Waight Keller does it for me. It’s only been the last few years that I’ve really started studying womenswear but I think her work for Chloe is fantastic.
How would you describe your latest collection and the inspiration behind it?
The spring/summer 2014 collection (my second women’s collection) was heavily influenced by athletics. As one of the main influences in my menswear line I applied the inspiration both literally and symbolically, for example, by using technical/performance fabrics like mesh and neoprene.
What style characteristics would you say most define your pieces?
The spring/summer 2014 collection definitely has a sporty feel, but in general, my aesthetic will always be clean and free from excess.
If you could describe your line in one word, what would it be?
Let's take a trip down memory lane. What was the first thing you ever designed? How did it turn out?
While I was at Pitzer College I repurposed some old jeans for a few friends (bleaching, abrading, sanding etc) and I thought they turned out alright. Of course at the time I also thought my rhinestoned bandana was dope so clearly I had no clue. But the fact that people actually liked the jeans gave me the confidence to pursue apparel design as a career and attend FIDM after Pitzer.
