Of course, we want to make sure it stays in tip-top condition all season long—but who wants to spend their hard-earned dollars at the cleaners? Not us! Well, as it turns out, hand washing a cashmere sweater is perfectly safe—and will actually make the cashmere feel softer over time, too!
Here’s what to do so you can properly care for your cashmere at home:
• Fill the sink with tepid water and add a quarter-size amount of baby shampoo (or a mild detergent like Woolite) to the water.
• Turn the sweater inside-out and submerge it, gently squeezing the soapy water through the knit. (If you're washing your sweater for the first time, it’s normal for a little color to bleed out.) Then, drain the water.
• Fill the sink again with fresh water, and rinse the cashmere thoroughly until the garment is sud-free.
• Lay the sweater flat on a clean towel, then roll the towel and sweater together—firmly pressing down to remove any excess water. (Or if you have an old salad spinner with a pull cord lying around, place the cashmere in the spinning compartment and spin 6 or 7 times—which will remove the water as well.) Then, lay completely flat to dry.
